Begin with the next few meals

Think about the meals you expect to prepare at home. Compare their ingredients with the actual stock in your fridge, freezer and pantry. A full pack, a half-used pack and a product with a similar name are not interchangeable amounts.

Before It Expires can show your current inventory while you write a shopping list elsewhere. The app does not create a meal plan for you. Your plans provide the context; the inventory helps you check the ingredients.

Write the gap, not the usual purchase

If you normally buy a product every week, pause before adding it automatically. Check the remaining quantity and the date on any existing pack. A discount is useful only when the product fits your plans and storage.

  • Search for the product name before adding another pack to your basket.
  • Check how much remains, using the recorded unit.
  • Notice products that already need attention.
  • Leave room for changes in the week’s plans.

Close the loop when you get home

Add the new purchases while putting them away. Keep different package dates as separate lots, then update the location if necessary. This is the moment when the receipt, package and product details are all close at hand.

After a few trips, review what you bought twice by mistake or regularly discarded. Change one repeat purchase before redesigning the whole routine. Your own records are a better starting point than an assumed “normal” amount for another household.
